Rev. David W. Ragan, Sr. VP of Resident Services, was glad to see so many in attendance and found that there were three residents attending for the first time. He informed residents of the passing of Rev. Dr. Ken Buckwald. Dr. Buckwald served as Associate Pastor of the Church of the Beatitudes beginning in 1967 and, for 25 years, was the President and CEO of Beatitudes. A celebration of Dr. Buckwald's Life was held on October 13th. David also noted that Rev. Dr. Dosia Carlson was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award at Diane Gregory's 8th Annual Senior Awards Luncheon. Dosia spent a year here at the Beatitudes in 1972 and returned to serve as senior minister in 1974. Since then, she has been a leader at Beatitudes and in many organizations such as VICAP, Area Aging studies at ASU and DUET.
Barbara Wood, Director of Development, invited residents to attend the 9th Annual Power of the Purse on Sunday, November 3rd from 2:00 to 4:00PM. Resident tickets are available in the Foundation office for $45 (general public tickets are $95) and 400 community people come to celebrate with us. The Foundation has received 420 purses to sell and auction off to the highest bidder. Since its inception, over 1.2 million dollars has been raised for residents and programs here on campus. The main emphasis of the Foundation is providing funds for the Resident Assistance Fund. Come on November 3rd and enjoy an interesting and exciting afternoon. Barbara also discussed the Dementia Friends Arizona program which is made possible from a grant from Banner Alzheimer's Institute. Under this program, managers and department directors are taking the one-hour training to become more understanding and knowledgeable about dementia. Residents and staff will have an opportunity to take this training over the next six months and turn their training into practical action here on Campus, making a difference in the lives of people with dementia. Training leaders include Rod Bailey, Barbara Wood, Tena Alonzo and Linda Travis.
Barbara Wood discussed a phishing incident that took place here on campus. Some residents' personal information may have been compromised as a result of the incident which took place at the end of July. All residents who were affected by the breach have been notified by letter. If you did not receive a letter, you were not affected by the incident. Beatitudes insurance is providing one year of identity theft protection to those residents affected. The letter explains the process for enrolling in the protection. Beatitudes administrators cannot enroll for you but will be happy to assist you in enrolling. Call the front desk and leave your name if you wish someone to help you through the enrollment process.
Residents Council President, Tom Denney, reported on Council business. In October, residents will be preparing to vote for some new Residents Council Building Representatives. This year's Junior Rep should move up to Senior and new Junior Reps will be elected. In some cases, both Senior and Junior Reps will need to be elected. As President of the Beatitudes Residents Council, Tom urged all of us to become active in the leadership of our buildings and the council. Run for office. Volunteer to help with the election process. Get involved in the place you have chosen to live!
Jessica Meyer, Director of Success Matters, called attention to upcoming activities in relation to Safe Senior Driving. Off-campus events include aarp Smart Driving Course that will take place on Mon., Oct. 28th from 8:15AM to 12:30PM at the Helen Drake Senior Center, 7600 N. 27th Avenue. Register by calling 602-262-4949. On Wed., Nov. 13th from 9:00AM to 1:00PM at the Helen Drake Senior Center Parking Lot, a CarFit technician will check 12 key areas of your vehicle to make sure your personal vehicle “fits” you to increase safety and mobility on the road. Register for this 15-minute appt. by calling 602-791-6583. Two safe driving events taking place on campus—no registration required. This course talks about how one might know when it is time to consider giving up the keys and what ways are out there to help you stay independent. Also “Driver Safety Checkups” in Agelink Great Room on Tues., Oct. 22nd 1-2PM and Thurs., Oct. 24th 9-10AM. Call Jessica at x16110 to register. This course includes physical check-ups to gauge vision and reflexes and receive recommendations for help in these areas.
John Schilling, Director of Life Enrichment, introduced Mollie Heiden, our new Life Enrichment Specialist who will be working on the 4th floor of the Health Care Center. Mollie is a certified Recreational Therapist and is looking forward to working with residents.
John called attention to the following activities: Phoenix art Museum docent talks every Tuesday in October in Boardrooms East/West at 1:00PM; and Scary Bingo on Tuesday, October 29th at 5:00PM in the Life Center (dress to impress with a Halloween costume). Tickets are $5 at the Bistro.
Mike Smallwood, Fitness Specialist, thanked residents and staff for their participation in the events of Breaking the Aging Myth Week. He announced the winners of the various contests. 1st place winner for the Corn Hole Toss and the Basketball Bounce Championship—Dean McCulley; 1st place winners in the Team Darts competition—BJ Prewitt, Maureen Wallace, Sally Drey, Janet Shaw, Rob Jones and Al Ellis; and 1st place in the Putting Championship—Dan O'Horo. Mike also thanked former Arizona Cardinal, Derek Kenard, and Arizona Rattlers, Lamar Mady and Josh Gordon, for spending their Friday evening with us. A good time was had by all! Coming up next is the 2019 LeadingAge Arizona Fitness Challenge for Seniors at North Phoenix Baptist Church on Wednesday, Nov. 6th. It will include wii bowling, Basketball Bounce, Indoor Walking, Obstacle Course and Chair Volleyball.
