Upcoming Spiritual Life Events

What does mean to feed your spirit? Unfortunately it isn't as straight forward as going to the Bistro and ordering up a cup of soup and a salad. We still need to feed our bodies with nutrition to keep ourselves going, but it is just as important to make sure we provide nutrients to our soul so we remain strong in body, heart, mind and spirit.

With the coming of the season of there are many opportunities provided by the Department to fill your spirit.

Tuesday, February 25th, is our second annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake ! The other name for this day, Pancake Day, comes from the old English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. The fattening ingredients that most people had in their houses in those days were eggs and milk. A very simple recipe to use up these ingredients was to combine them with some flour and make pancakes! Come to the Life Center anytime between 8:00—10:00AM to feed your spirit in fellowship as you fill your tummy with delicious pancakes.

On February 26th, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Come to the Life Center anytime between 8:00AM—noon to have ashes placed on your forehead as a symbol of the fragility of human nature and our commitment during the Lenten season to admit our sins and better ourselves as people. You may also use this quiet space for contemplation and prayer. Lenten Calendars will be available to take home at this time or available in the Life office. Each day of the calendar gives you an idea for an activity, prayer or scripture reading. Small reminders to move through each day of Lent with purpose to feed your soul.

On Saturday, February 29th, there will be a Taizé Service at 4:00PM in the Life Center. Taizé is a non-denominational style of service which has been embraced by many denominations within Christianity. The Taizé movement grew out of an ecumenical monastic community in the village of Taizé, France. Chaplains Andrew and Peggy will both be leading the service and music will be provided by pianist Aiko Yamada Mancini. All are welcome to feed their spirits at this contemplative service.

Beginning Wednesday, March 4th, you are welcome to join a 6 week Bible Study on the last words Jesus spoke from the cross. To guide us in our and we will be using artwork created by Scott Erikson. Scott uses symbolism in his work allowing deeper meaning to be discovered the more you study each piece.

Feeding your spirit is an ongoing task that must be done with purpose and intention. Each of us may find different ways to do this and they are important to make time for. We hope the opportunities presented to you this Lenten season by the Spiritual Life Department give you at least some ways to provide nutrition for your soul.
