Beatitudes Community

State of the Campus | Oct. 16

Starting Tuesday, October 20, we are re-opening the Bistro for dining for Independent Living residents only for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reservations must be made. The dining room will be laid out in compliance with the CDC and state guidelines. Dining staff will be temperature checking all residents who are eating in the Bistro. Residents will be social distanced, two per table and we will accommodate a maximum of 40 residents. Outdoor seating will also be available.

A Note About Dining Specials

There’s an all-new supplement to the Roadrunner which includes all dining specials for the week. If you did not receive one, please see the dining venues for an additional copy.

This week, beginning Wednesday, check out the fresh new Buckwald’s menu featuring a 52-week rotating menu. Look forward to the incredibe variety in the new insert called The Crave.

On this note, the additional space vacated by the specials will allow us to restructure the Roadrunner. Look for these fresh updates in this edition and future revisions taking place over time.

Fall is Officially Here and Monica is Back!

Hosanna Rae De La Rosa

If you were wondering where Monica has been for the last month and a half, wonder no more because she is back!  While Monica was out, she welcomed her first baby, Hosanna Rae De La Rosa into the world.  Hosanna’s birthday came 3 weeks early and she still weighed a healthy 5.7 lbs.  If you haven’t seen a picture of her precious baby, you must stop by the Recreation Center and take a look for yourself.  Now that Monica has returned, her hours, days and title have changed.  Monica is now a full time Recreation Specialist and no longer with transportation.  She is here Monday through Friday and no longer Wednesday- Sunday. Church runs will remain the same with another driver.  We would like to personally thank Mireya for helping out while Monica was gone.  Mireya will still be on campus for some time helping out with transportation in the meantime.

Now, time to highlight some events for October!

On Tuesday, October 4th, we will be packing our lunch and heading to the Herberger Lunch Time Theater for a show called “A Little Something Called Family.”  Boarding passes for this event are available at the Welcome Center for $7. You will also want to grab your ticket to the Arizona Broadway Theatre for a show called “Funny Girl.” Boarding passes are $80 and includes lunch.

Come and hear the courageous story of Adolfo “Harpo” Celaya.  Adolfo will share his life story  and how he didn’t speak a word of English when entering the first grade, how he survived one of the most horrific experiences a man could endure with the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, and how he led a band of six Mexican Americans on a rampage through the Arizona state high school basketball championship tournament in 1947.  Adolfo will be speaking on Tuesday, October 25th at 10AM in the Life Center.  All are encouraged to attend.

Our Oktoberfest theme dinner will take place on Thursday, October 27th starting at 5PM.  Entertainment by the Oom-Pah-Pah Band will start at 6PM. Tickets and menu will be available for purchase and viewing in all dining venues closer to the event date.

We will be hosting our second Annual Variety Show on Friday, October 28th, from 10AM-12PM in the Life Center. Come ready to sing along, laugh and enjoy awesome entertainment from our very own residents and staff.

With only a few events highlighted, please be on the lookout for the monthly synopsis sheet located in your building lobby with ALL the upcoming events on and off campus.

Important Dining Incentive B-Card Updates

There are a number of updates to the B-Card incentive program that I will explain to you. First, all convenience store items and boxes of Cerretta’s candy are excluded from the B-Card incentive. We will also limit the number of ice cream, quarts of milk and bottled beverages you may purchase at one time. There will be a letter delivered to each of you middle of the week with additional information.

What has not changed: You may still purchase meals at all of our venues, purchase grab and go sandwiches, salads and fruits, Corner Perk coffee drinks, guest meals, Farmer’s Market and catering. The Assisted Living dining incentive program has NOT changed.

The dining incentive is based on socialization and flexibility. Please use your dining incentive to enjoy more meals with us. Come for breakfast more often, enjoy lunch in any venue or come to Elaine’s more often. You may also buy a pizza or have a party. Why not? It’s included. Look for an informational letter this Wednesday or Thursday.

Foundation for the Future

Dining Services has a long standing tradition of developing talent within the department. Most of our current supervisors were servers or cooks within the department. We hire a large number of younger people in Dining Services. Many of the people we hire have no interest in a career in Dining Services. That’s okay. We understand not everyone will be a “lifer” like me. However, we do get a large number of very vibrant, personable and talented individuals entering our doors. We teach them how to provide a customer service experience and work with others while serving their 700 new grandparents.

Many great careers have been launched in food service mostly as a stop gap to earn money while going to school. Our very own CEO, Michelle Just, got her start in food service as a bartender during college before beginning her healthcare career as an administrator in Denver. When Michelle moved to Arizona, she started at the Campus in 2000 as a marketing counselor, was promoted to VP of Fund Development, then Sr. VP, Health Services before ultimately being promoted to Chief Executive Officer of the Campus in 2014.

Many others within Dining Services have developed and transferred to other departments starting as servers and working their way up to lead server then supervisor. After having this experience, they transferred to Human Resources, Life Enrichment, Resident Services, Transportation, and Welcome Center roles. We love to see our people develop and learn. Who knows, our next CEO in the future might have been a Campus Dining Services team member!

The Dining Services Department has recently launched an intentional development tool titled “Path to Promotion” to ensure formal growth paths for staff.  Team members are invited to participate and given activities within the department designed specifically to learn the next steps on the path to promotion, so that they are ready when a next level position comes available. The persons in the program will be mentored through the steps on the path by their immediate supervisor and frequent conversations will take place with the staff member along the path until they have developed competency in the activities and are ready to come off the bench and fill a next level role within the department.

Beatitudes Campus is a leader in senior living and it only makes sense to develop people and become a learning organization.  Further developing on the gifts and talents our team members possess will assist not only in providing an exceptional customer experience for current residents, but will continue our legacy into the future as the premier place in Arizona to live or work.

P.S.  I’d love to hear from you if you have grown here at the Campus.  Please leave a comment below about your experience.

A resident note was received in HR about Rebecca Shia (Dining Services).  The resident mentions that,

“Rebecca is always smiling and happy in her work.  She does an exceptional job keeping the Bistro tables clean and makes sure the residents are comfortable.”

Andreus Caldwell, Dining, Team Member since October 2011

Assisted living staff want to give a shout out to Andreus “Dre” Caldwell (Dining Services), a member of the Bistro culinary team.

“Dre always get the orders correct and if we ask him to add his personal twist to the menu items (which always makes them taste better), he does it quickly and with a smile.  HE ROCKS!!!”

What are you cooking with back there, Dre? Good ol’ fashion Campus love and hospitality? That’s what it sounds like to us.  Great work – thank you!
