Beatitudes Community

Friends of Plaza View

I recently had lunch with a great fellow, Charles Hobgood. It seemed as though we had known each other for years-and in full disclosure, I knew of him before I ever actually met him. “Hobs”, as he prefers to be known, came to the campus from Defiance, Ohio where he taught at Defiance College, a United Church of Christ College. He and Marabeth conducted most of their research about the campus from afar, taking video tours and attending webinars that we conducted over the course of the pandemic.

But little could I have known the heart of this true giver until we had an opportunity for a little “tea and toast”, and he shared with me a vision for being of service to our assisted living residents in Plaza View. So, with his vision, foresight and kindness, we are starting an organized program of serving residents called “Friends of Plaza View”. Hobs has penned some narrative that I believe says it quite well:

Even after all this time
The sun never says to the moon
“You owe me”
What happens with a love like that?
It lights the whole world

Hafiz – 13th century Persian mystic

Hafix’s main point is how important it is to make a contribution. This is verified by what the gerontology literature says today are the two most important aspects in aging well – namely having an influence on our daily lives and making a contribution in our world. The opportunity to participate in the Friends of Plaza View gives residents of the Beatitudes a chance to actualize both of these characteristics.

What does becoming a Friend of Plaza View ask? It asks that you do one of two things – either become a one-on-one friend with a resident of Plaza View or volunteer to help in the facility for an hour each week helping the staff do things like distribute the mail or pass out beverages, etc. What does become a “one on one friend” mean? It could mean many things such as just sitting in conversation, watching a TV show together, attending an event together of just taking them out into the sun.

I think on of the greatest definitions of love is: “love is the process of leading you back to yourself.” What is the process of leading you back to yourself? LISTENING!! Sometimes a person needs a story more than dinner. Oh, and one more extremely important point – this is a two-way street where we both learn from each other. The chance to sit under a canopy on the patio outside of Plaza View and chat with a hundred-year-old plus African American woman about the life she’s led in a segregated word is like a free graduate school education without tests and papers.

How do we get started? The short way is, if this speaks to you after you have read about the opportunity is to email me at [email protected] and I will get in touch!! (Please leave your email, phone and campus address and which of the two opportunities speaks to you.)

If you want more information, a staff member or I will be coming to the various building meetings to chat more and try to engage you in this project. It is important to know that this is a need well beyond our campus and nationally 56% of all Plaza View-like residents identify loneliness as a major issue.

Rod’s epilogue: So, along with Hobs, I am thrilled to be a part of an organized effort to be the community that cares – from within and with not only staff but residents involved. Thank you, sir for your generous spirit and heart that radiates the true mission of this campus! Great days ahead!

Seeking a BINGO Caller in Plaza View

If you’ve ever visited bingo in Plaza View, then you’ll know just how important a bingo caller can be. They’re responsible for more than just calling out numbers, they keep the players happy, and they make sure the game runs as smoothly as possible. Come join in on the fun and be our B-I-N-G-O Caller, you are sure to have a great time. If interested in volunteering for this opportunity, contact Didi at x18526.

State of the Campus – August 7

Beatitudes Campus is continuing to test staff and residents. All residents in the Sierra Springs (3rd floor) and Vermilion Cliffs (4th floor) neighborhoods will be re-tested for COVID-19 today, August 7. The next all-staff testing at the campus is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11 in the Life Center.

State of the Campus – July 31

On Thursday, Beatitudes Campus did another mass testing of all Beatitudes Campus staff. As I have said in many letters, we feel that this is one of the most important things we can do to slow the spread of COVID-19. We will be getting the staff results starting this evening. We did receive the results of Tuesday’s retesting of residents on the third and fourth floors in the Health Care Center. There were two positive asymptomatic residents and 26 negative results. We have moved the two residents from the fourth floor to our Isolation Unit on the third floor.

State of the Campus – July 21

338 staff tested negative and eight staff tested positive; all eight staff are asymptomatic and are in quarantine at home; nine results are still pending. This situation highlights why testing and quick turnaround of testing results are so important. With the screening that we instituted four months ago, before anyone steps foot on campus – temperature checks and symptom checks – we are never able to catch the asymptomatic or presymptomatic individuals without routine testing and a 24-hour turnaround of results.

From the President & CEO | July 17

As of this morning, we currently have 19 active COVID-19 cases on campus – 6 residents and 13 staff. Thankfully, 46 individuals have recovered – 16 residents and 30 staff. We have lost 9 residents to COVID-19 and no staff. Our hearts prayers go out to the families and the individuals for healing and peace in this uncertain time.

Shout Out to Christine Monroe

We recently received a letter about a Plaza View Caregiver and Med-Tech.  The resident shared this note about Christine Monroe (AL),

Christine Monroe, AL, Team Member since March 2013

Christine Monroe, AL, Team Member since March 2013

“Christine has become the ‘go to’ med tech/caregiver at Plaza View!  Any day and any shift–Christine is plugged in  to take over the needed responsibilities.  To say she’s invaluable is not an exaggeration!  As a senior employee, Christine is very savvy about all the details of both positions.  She knows all the residents well and can minister to their needs.  She knows where supplies and equipment can be found to facilitate effective care.  Christine wears many hats in Plaza View making her quite an asset to the smooth functioning of Assisted Living here at the Beatitudes.  Her upbeat nature is refreshing amid the challenges that confront staff on a regular basis.  Christine does not engage in negative chit-chat nor complain about her lot.  She almost seems tireless when called upon to do an occasional back to back shift.  Ms. Monroe is a valued member of the corps of med tech/caregivers.  We thank her for her service above and beyond the ‘normal’ call of duty!”

Great note – thanks, Christine!

Shout Out to Adrielle Johnson

Adrielle Johnson, Plaza View, Team Member since February 2016

Adrielle Johnson, Plaza View, Team Member since February 2016

It always wonderful to start the week off with a dose of awesomeness.  Read on to hear what one Plaza View resident had to say about a caregiver that’s about to complete her first three months here at the Campus…

To Whom It May Concern: The caregiver, Adrielle Johnson is a rare treasure in the staff at Plaza View !  She is a consummate worker among the staff entrusted with the welfare of the residents.  She is the bearer of a high standard of work ethics.  Adrielle does not skip tasks or do half-hearted jobs.  She is efficient and reliable.  The residents are serene in the expectation of the shift is in capable hands when Adrielle is on duty.  Nothing that comes her way ruffles her demeanor.  Quietly but masterfully she takes care of all matters in her care.  Adrielle inspires tranquility where e’er she works !  We here are very fortunate to have Adrielle with us.  Even her colleagues are impressed by her skills.  What was heartening was that she came to us already with these qualifications and never went through that “newbie” stage.  She is a treasure for sure and we are fortunate to have her with us!

Great work, Adrielle!
