The New AZ Travel ID

Plan on visiting a nuclear facility in the coming months? If so, you'll need to obtain the AZ Travel ID card that comes into effect October 1st. If not, you'll want to get the new ID anyway.

Why do I need the new ID if I don't drive or plan to fly?

The name “AZ Travel ID” is unfortunately narrow. You need a valid (not expired) ID to vote, to do business at a bank, to use a notary, to apply for ALTCS or AHCCCS, or to request official documents such as death or birth certificates. The new Travel ID can be a driver's license or State ID card.

Why is this happening now?

It actually happened fifteen years ago. Arizona is complying with the Federal REAL ID Act of 2005. The Federal government requested these standards after 9/11, and gave the states an extended time frame to meet the requirements. The new ID is needed to enter a military base, a federal building and air space. It contains added features to protect against and counterfeiting.

Can't I just get the regular non-travel ID instead?

You can, but the process is essentially the same. You still need the same documents.

How Do I get the New ID?

You will need to provide Proof of Identity, Proof of Social Security, and Proof of AZ Residency. Proof of identity can be a birth certificate (original or certified copy) or a valid (non-expired) passport. Proof of Social Security can be the card itself, a W-2, or an SSA1099 or non-SSA1099 . These can be obtained through the Social Security if you have an account. If your current legal name is different than it was on your birth certificate or passport, you will need to provide proof of name change, such as a marriage license. Finally, Proof of AZ Residency is two documents—such as pieces of mail or bills—that show your current name and address.

Success Matters will be hosting a Travel ID Application on 17th at 10:00AM in Agelink 3 where we will provide you with the Travel ID application. We can also review your collected sources of identification if you have questions. We are working with MVD to arrange for campus residents to visit as a group to minimize wait time.

If you need help setting up a Social Security account online, or obtaining official records to support your application, please let Josephine know at x16117.
